Overview of Uganda’s school system
Uganda’s system is broadly a 7–4–2–3+ structure, strongly influenced by the British model. en.wikipedia
- Pre‑primary (nursery): About 3–6 years old, often called Baby, Middle, and Top Class. Mostly private and not universal. projecthavehope
- Primary (P1–P7): Officially starts at age 6 and lasts 7 years. Ends with the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) at the end of P7. epdc
- Lower secondary (S1–S4, “O‑Level”): 4 years, typically ages ~13–17, ending with the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE). uganda-sachsen-partnerschaft
- Upper secondary (S5–S6, “A‑Level”): 2 years, ages ~17–19, ending with the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE), needed for university entry. epdc
- Tertiary / higher education: Universities and other institutions (3+ years) for diplomas and degrees. scholaro
In practice, ages are often more variable than in Europe or the US, because students may start late, repeat grades, or take breaks due to school fees and family finances. hands4uganda
Typical stages and ages in comparison with other schoolar systems around the world
Bellow is a simplified comparison of Uganda vs a typical EU country, the US, and Australia. Ages are “ideal” starting ages; in reality there is variation.
Key structural patterns
- Uganda: 7 years primary, 6 years secondary (split 4+2), then tertiary. iicba.unesco
- EU (typical pattern, e.g. Germany/France/Spain): 1–3 years early childhood, 4–6 years primary, then lower + upper secondary up to age 16–18, then tertiary. resources.finalsite
- US: 1 year kindergarten, 5–6 years elementary, 3 years middle, 4 years high school, then tertiary. askfilo
- Australia: 1 year prep/kindergarten, Years 1–6 primary, Years 7–12 secondary, then tertiary. reddit

Main similarities and differences
-
Similarities:
- All four systems have primary → secondary → tertiary progression, with some form of final school‑leaving qualification before university (e.g., A‑Levels in Uganda, Abitur/Bachillerato/Baccalauréat in EU, high school diploma in US, Year 12 certificate in Australia). iicba.unesco
- Pre‑primary education exists everywhere, but is not always universal and often more privatized in Uganda. suubi
-
Differences:
- Uganda has a longer, exam‑heavy secondary path (O‑Level at S4 and A‑Level at S6), while US and Australia rely more on cumulative grades plus some standardized tests. uganda-sachsen-partnerschaft
- Age variation inside classes is much higher in Uganda because of late entry, repetition, and interruptions due to costs; in EU, US, and Australia classes are more tightly age‑cohort based. hands4uganda
- Funding and access differ significantly: Ugandan primary is officially free and compulsory but families often still pay substantial costs; EU/US/Australia generally have publicly funded compulsory education up to at least age 16. en.wikipedia
